Isonomia and the Origins of Philosophy, Kojin Karatani (2017)

The work of Karatani places the origins of democracy and philosophy in the so called “Isonomia” – a system based on non-rule and lack of social division, where equality lies in freedom to immigrate. Comparing this with the idealisation image of athenian democracy, the author questions the western commitment to a democracy with echos of imperialism, slavery and exclusion rather than to the openness of isonomia.
